Foster (Herbert Baldwin) papers, 1897-1900

The collection consists of five folders. Two of them contain a manuscript of, most likely, Foster's presentation to the Philological Seminar in 1900 on the deus ex machina in Euripides's plays. The other three folders are most likely a draft of his dissertation on the same topic.

Herbert Baldwin Foster was born on November 12, 1874 in Amherst, Massachusetts. He earned his A.B. at Harvard in 1895, and taught for one year at the Brooklyn Latin School in Brooklyn, New York. In 1897 he entered Hopkins to earn his Ph.D. in Greek. In 1905, he completed the first English translation of Cassius Dio Cocceianus's History of Rome. Foster died in 1906.
